8 day hiking tour in Slovenia

Day 1 – Meet at Ljubljana Airport and on to Lake Bohinj

Welcome to Slovenia! Upon landing at Jože Pučnik Airport in Ljubljana, you will meet your guide and start the tour. First, we drive to Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia. Settle at the hotel and if time permits, do a walking tour of the major sites in downtown Ljubljana. We will explore the lively city center and saunter down the main street along the banks of the Ljubljanica River. Visit a classical European castle, parks, and churches as we wind our way around by foot. We will appreciate the legacy of architect Jože Plečnik around the city at worthwhile stops such as the National LibraryCentral MarketTriple Bridge, and Plečnik's own home turned museum, all under the watchful eyes of the city's many signature dragons. The Central Market is also a key site for sampling local cuisine at its many stalls. After Ljubljana city tour we transfer to lake Bohinj, which is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Slovenia. Overnight in a hotel in Bohinj.

Day 2 – Lake Bohinj

After breakfast we spend the day around Lake Bohinj. We start the walk from our hotel on the southern side of the lake. A beautiful forest trail will take us to the west side of the lake from where we start the climb towards Savica waterfall. During our hike we make stops and learn a lot about local culture and tales. After climbing Savica waterfall we hike back down to the lake and on the northern side return back to our hotel.

Altogether a gentle 15 kilometer hike on good trails will take us about 5-6 hours. About 350 meters of ascend

Day 3 – Full day at lake Bled from Bohinj

After breakfast we drive towards lake Bled, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. This picture-postcard lake with its island is one of Slovenia's main attractions. We start our walk from Mlino, one of the villages on the lake. Our first goal will be Velika Osojnica, from where we will see one of the most spectacular views of Lake Bled. We descend back to the lake and start our walk towards Vintgar gorge. We walk on quiet paths through rolling country of forests, fields and villages to  Podhodm from where we enter the gorge. We walk the craggy walkways and see some nice waterfalls. A short climb to the church of Saint Katarina, will slowly take us back to Bled, where our car will wait for us.

Altogether a hike of about 15 kilometers on very well maintained paths will take us around 5-6 hours. About 550 meters of ascend

After the hike we return to lake Bohinj. Overnight in a hotel in Bohinj.

Day 4 – Free day at lake Bohinj

Today you have a free day at lake Bohinj to spend at your own leisure. There are still numerous options on the hikes you can make today.

We highly recommend ascend with the cable car up to 1537m at Vogel Mountain. After some beautiful views of the lake and the majestic Julian Alps you have an option of short or long hikes. All on very well marked paths.

Another option is to walk around villages in Bohinj valley or ascend of Vogar mountain. You will definitely have a lot of options today.

Day 5 – Over the mountains towards Bovec

After breakfast we start our drive to Soriška Planina. Once we arrive we go on a shorter hike to Možic (1603 meters, ascend of 300 meters and about a 2 hours hike) for some excellent views of the Julian Alps and if we are lucky also Slovenian coast. After our short hike we drive on to Soča Valley. Our first stop will be Tolmin Gorges, the common name for the Tolminka and Zadlaščica gorge, one of the most magnificent natural sites in the region. We go on an easy 2 kilometer hike around the george and then continue on with our drive to Bovec. On the way we do a short stop at mighty Boka Boka. With a total height of 144m and width of 18m, it is also one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Europe. After arrival to Bovec we go straight to our hotel. Overnight in a hotel in Bovec.

Day 6 – Historic walk through Soča valley

After breakfast we start our hike from Bovec. Today's day full of history will give us a well rounded view of the impact Soča valley had during World War I. Fort Hermann and fort Kluže were both created for the defense of Predil pass, a natural opening of the Julian Alps to the interior of Europe. Kluže has long stood as a fortress in this area, dating back to the 15th century where it was used to prevent the Turkish invasions to Koroška. Most recently it was used as a defense on the Austrio-Hungarian front, during the first world war, from an Italian invasion. Fort Hermann was also constructed during this time as support for Kluže. We start our hike with slowly ascending on the slopes of mt. Rombon and across the valley to the forts. At the forts the trail descends and returns along the valley floor back to Bovec. Overnight in a hotel in Bovec.

Altogether a hike of about 14 kilometers on very well maintained paths will take us around 5-6 hours. About 750 meters of ascend

Day 7 – From Bovec across the Julian Alps to Kranjska gora

After breakfast we drive up the Soča valley towards the highest mountain pass in Slovenia. Vrsič pass is 1611 meter high and home to some amazing views. We go on a hike to Slemenova Špica (1911m), which will take us about 3 hours on a well marked path. We return to our car and drive  down to Lake Jasna, another beautiful sight for today. We take a short break here and have the opportunity to hike a bit, or just enjoy some coffee and views. Then we drive on past Kranjska Gora until Zelenci Nature Reserve, where we do another short hike around the area. Zelenci is a remainder of a mighty lake that might have been here millions of years ago. After another short hike here we head back to Kranjska Gora and settle in our hotel.
